The community

Gold Canyon at a glance

The Census Bureau counts 13,107 people in the Gold Canyon census-designated place, and 7,112 of them, 54.3%, are 65 or older. The median age is 66.6, median household income is about $93,000, and 6.7% of residents have no health insurance. Among the communities on this site, only Sun Lakes, at 78.9% aged 65 or older, has a larger older share.

Gold Canyon is an unincorporated community in Pinal County, east of Apache Junction, so residents choose from the Pinal County plan list. Care happens outside the community: Banner Goldfield Medical Center in Apache Junction is the nearest hospital in the CMS file, and the larger East Valley hospitals are in Mesa. That is why this page spotlights PPO plans, which let you see doctors outside the network at a higher cost.

Heart care deserves a close look here. CDC estimates put coronary heart disease at 10.3% of Gold Canyon adults, against 6.4% for the average Arizona county. Banner Heart Hospital in Mesa is in the CMS file, but it lists no emergency services. For emergencies, the file lists Banner Goldfield in Apache Junction and, farther west, the emergency departments at the Mesa hospitals. Two of the seven hospitals carry a 5 of 5 CMS overall rating: Banner Goldfield and Dignity Health Arizona General. Whichever plan you pick, check that your cardiologist and the emergency department you would reach first are both in it.

How Viola helps here. Gold Canyon clients work with Viola by phone or video, or at the Chandler, AZ office. Viola holds the CLTC (Certified in Long-Term Care) designation, so with more than half the community 65 or older, the Medigap or Advantage conversation can include how you would pay for long-term care. Before comparing plans she lists the doctors and hospitals you actually use, in Apache Junction, Mesa or farther away, because the network is the first thing that matters when care is a drive away. If you would rather learn the basics in a group first, her free Medicare workshop runs every Wednesday at 11:00 AM and 5:30 PM at the Chandler office, and family members helping a parent or loved one are welcome too.

The other path

Medigap in Gold Canyon

Every Advantage plan on this page replaces Original Medicare with a plan network. The other path keeps Original Medicare and adds a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy plus a separate Part D plan.

Medigap has no network (except Medicare SELECT policies): any provider that accepts Medicare accepts it, anywhere in the country. You pay a monthly Medigap premium on top of Part B, while most Advantage plans on this list charge $0, and in exchange your costs are more predictable.

Timing matters. Your 6-month Medigap open enrollment window starts when you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. Inside it, an insurer cannot turn you down or charge more for your health. Outside it, in most cases it can (CMS, Choosing a Medigap Policy). See Medicare Advantage vs Medigap.

Health profile

What is common in Gold Canyon

Plan choice follows the conditions you actually live with, because they decide which specialists and drugs you need covered.

CDC PLACES: Local Data for Better Health, Place Data, 2025 release (2023 survey estimates), retrieved 2026-10-26. Model-based small-area estimates of crude prevalence among adults 18 and over, not a count of local diagnoses. Crude rates follow the age mix of a place: an older community reads higher on most conditions. Arizona figure: average of the 15 Arizona counties, weighted by adult population.

Why this matters for plan choice

Gold Canyon runs above the Arizona average on high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diagnosed diabetes, coronary heart disease, and stroke. The chronic-condition Special Needs Plans on the Pinal County list are built around these conditions: cardiovascular disorders, chronic heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes mellitus. If you live with one of those, a C-SNP may be worth a look; you need a qualifying diagnosis to join.

PPO plans let you see doctors outside the network, usually at a higher cost, and most do not need a referral to see a specialist. Each one still has its own network: check that your doctors and the hospital you would use are in it for 2027.

Star ratings shown are 2026 ratings, because the 2027 plan file used here carries no star ratings yet.

Plain English

Medicare plan terms on this page

Medicare Advantage (Part C)
A Medicare approved plan from a private company that provides your Part A and Part B benefits in place of Original Medicare. Most include drug coverage and some extras. You keep paying your Part B premium.
$0 premium plan
The plan charges no monthly premium of its own for medical or drug coverage. Some plans have a $0 medical premium but still charge for drug coverage, so check both. You still pay your Part B premium, plus copays or coinsurance when you use care.
In-network out-of-pocket maximum (MOOP)
The most you pay in a calendar year for covered Part A and Part B services from in-network providers. Once you reach it, the plan pays for covered in-network care for the rest of the year. Premiums and Part D drug costs do not count toward it.
HMO
Health Maintenance Organization. You generally use doctors and hospitals in the plan network, except for emergencies and urgent care, and many HMOs ask for a referral before you see a specialist.
PPO
Preferred Provider Organization. You can use doctors in or out of the network, but out-of-network care usually costs more. Referrals are usually not required.
HMO-POS
An HMO with a point of service option. You mostly use the network, but the plan lets you get some services out of network, usually at a higher cost.
Special Needs Plan (SNP)
A Medicare Advantage plan open only to people with particular needs: both Medicare and Medicaid (AHCCCS in Arizona), certain chronic conditions, or living in an institution such as a nursing home.
Star rating
A yearly CMS quality score from 1 to 5 stars, based on measures such as preventive care, member experience and customer service. It describes the plan overall; it does not tell you whether your doctors or drugs are covered.
FAQ

Gold Canyon Medicare questions

How many Medicare Advantage plans are available in Gold Canyon for 2027?

Gold Canyon uses the Pinal County plan list. It has 47 Medicare Advantage plans for 2027 (Special Needs Plans not included) from 10 organizations, and 35 of them have a $0 monthly premium for medical and drug coverage. You still pay the Part B premium, which is $202.90 a month in 2026; the 2027 amount is announced around November 2026. Source: CMS 2027 Landscape file.

How many Medicare Advantage plans in Gold Canyon have a 4 star rating or higher?

13 of the 47 Medicare Advantage plans on the Pinal County list for 2027 carry a 2026 CMS star rating of 4 or higher, and the average across rated plans is 3.72 stars. The 2027 plan file used here carries no star ratings yet, so these are the 2026 ratings. Stars measure plan quality overall; they do not tell you whether your doctors or prescriptions are covered, so Viola checks those as well. Source: CMS 2027 Landscape file and 2026 star ratings.

Which Medicare plan list applies in Gold Canyon?

The Pinal County list. Gold Canyon is an unincorporated community that the Census Bureau counts as a census-designated place, and its ZIP code, 85118, is in Pinal County, so every Medicare Advantage plan CMS lists for Pinal County in 2027 is available to Gold Canyon addresses. The HealthCare.gov county lookup places 85118 in Pinal County only. Neighboring Apache Junction ZIP codes 85119 and 85120 cross into Maricopa County, so if your mailing address uses one of those, the county on your address decides your plan list, and Viola confirms it before comparing plans.

Where is the nearest hospital to Gold Canyon?

There is no hospital inside Gold Canyon. The nearest one in the CMS hospital file is Banner Goldfield Medical Center in Apache Junction, and the larger East Valley hospitals listed on this page are in Mesa. Before you choose a plan, check that the hospital you would actually use is in its network for 2027.

Can Viola help me decide between Medigap and Medicare Advantage in Gold Canyon?

Yes. Viola walks Gold Canyon clients through both paths: a Medicare Supplement with a stand-alone Part D plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan from the Pinal County list. She starts with your doctors, your prescriptions and how often you travel, then shows you what each path would cost in 2027. Meet by phone, by video or at the Chandler, AZ office, 2160 North Alma School Road, Suite 102; call (480) 300-5776 to set a time.

What changes for Medicare plans in Gold Canyon in 2027?

In Pinal County, plans with drug coverage (Special Needs Plans included) go from 62 in 2026 to 65 in 2027. The CMS crosswalk shows 7 plans ending or leaving the county with no successor there, 2 plans folding into another plan, and 11 new plans; the remaining difference comes from existing plans whose service area changed. No carrier leaves the county entirely. Your plan’s Annual Notice of Change lists what changes for you on January 1.

Can I buy a separate Part D drug plan in Gold Canyon for 2027?

Yes. Standalone Part D plans are sold by region rather than by county, and CMS lists 9 of them in Arizona for 2027. People usually pair one with Original Medicare and a Medigap policy. In 2027 the yearly cap on what you pay for covered Part D drugs is $2,400, up from $2,100 in 2026. Viola checks your own drug list against each plan. Source: CMS 2027 Landscape file and Part D program parameters.

When can I change my Medicare plan if I live in Gold Canyon?

Most changes happen during the Annual Enrollment Period, October 15 to December 7, 2026, for coverage that starts January 1, 2027. If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, you get one more chance from January 1 to March 31 to switch plans or return to Original Medicare. Moving, losing employer coverage or gaining AHCCCS can open a Special Enrollment Period at other times. These dates are the same in every Arizona county.

What does local data say about health coverage in Gold Canyon?

Census figures (ACS 2020 to 2024 5-year estimates) show 6.7% of Gold Canyon residents with no health insurance, against 10.5% for Arizona. For people under 65, we enroll you through HealthCare.gov, the Marketplace Arizona uses; open enrollment for 2027 coverage starts November 1, 2026.

Sources and methodology

How the figures are derived

  • Headline plan counts and averages exclude Special Needs Plans, which have their own eligibility rules and are reported separately.
  • The "$0 monthly premium" count means $0 for medical and drug coverage together; the medical premium alone is reported separately. Out-of-pocket limits are in-network amounts. The average Part D deductible covers plans with drug coverage only.
  • The 2026 to 2027 comparison counts Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage, Special Needs Plans included, so it differs from the headline count.
  • We do not publish per-plan enrollment: the source does not carry it, and we never estimate plan figures.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 34 organizations which offer 64 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
